DeLand Athletics ~ 2016-17 Accomplishments and Review!

What a year for DeLand High School Sports! Our Athletics Department introduced many new people that wore the DeLand Green & Gold Proudly: Garon Keuten (Football), Melissa Thogmartin (Softball), Robert Moore (Head Varsity Girls Basketball), Damion Dunn (Girls Basketball), Roger Hutchinson (Head Varsity Baseball), Elizabeth Strople (Assistant Athletic Director), Steve Allen (Head Varsity Football), Jarek Thomas (Strength & Condition), and Thomas Moody (Football).

Ms. Quackenbush received over 800 physical forms for student-athletes wanting to participate in Athletics. Over 500 student-athletes competed at the Varsity level and over 200 at the Junior Varsity level.

During the 2016-17 School Year: Two Teams took District Titles: Flag Football under the powerful coaching of Chris Dowdell, and Baseball with a 7th inning upset after trailing to Cross-Town Rivals University O.C. We placed 2nd during the District Tournament in Boys Golf, Boys Bowling, Boys Basketball, Boys Soccer, and Softball. Connor Painter from Boys Golf took 1st place during the District Tournament. Cheyenne Dunn took 1st in the 400m at the District Tournament. Christina Clark was recognized as Daytona Beach News Journal's Girls Swimmer of the Year as well as the Spectrum Sports Girls Swimming Athlete of the Year.

Boys Basketball, Softball, and Baseball made it to the Regional Quarterfinals. Twelve swimmers placed at Regionals. Track and Field competed at Regionals with Jeremy Wilson, Enrique Flores, Tyler Rollins, Mani Hinds and Javeion Goosby. Flag Football made it to the Regional Semifinals. Boys Weightlifting placed 2nd at the Regional Tournament. Boys Soccer made it to the Elite Eight in the State for the first time in DeLand High School’s History.

The Boys Bowling placed 17th at the State Tournament in Orlando. Christina Clark, Elijah Wheeler, Kyle Youngquist, Jason Scharlach and Jacob Morgan from the Swim team were the first DHS swimmers in eight years, and first relay in 20 years to compete at the State Tournament. Jessica Strickland, Madisyn Harrison, and Emma Geyer from Girls Weightlifting competed in the State Tournament. Will Hennessy placed 5th at the State Wrestling Finals. Jeremy Wilson placed 5th and George Ridgeway placed 6th at the Boys State Weightlifting Finals.

We hosted over 120 regular season home games at Sunshine Lanes, Sperling Sports Complex, Spec Martin Stadium, Victoria Hills CC, DeLand YMCA, Conrad Park, and our gymnasium, tennis courts, softball and baseball field. We hosted Boys Soccer, Wrestling and Flag Football Districts, Cross Country and Boys Golf 5-Star, and various Regional Tournaments. Helping the City of DeLand, we were part of the 4-Day State Soccer Tournament at Spec Martin Stadium. Further, in our very own Gymnasium, with the help of Spruce Creek High School and many of our faculty/staff/students, we hosted the 2-Day Boys State Final Weightlifting Tournament.

Over $756,000 in Scholarships were awarded to our student-athletes that will be performing at the College Level.

At the Florida Interscholastic Athletic Administrator Association (FIAAA) Annual Conference, our Athletic Director, Paul Ryder, and the Assistant Athletic Director, Elizabeth Strople, presented a breakout session to ADs from across the State about Communication.

Our Athletics website has made major leaps in the marketing of all the great accomplishments and opportunities our Department offers. I would say that we have one of the best High School Athletics websites in the state…

This is a year to remember!

We appreciate everyone who supports our department.
